I’ve tried online dating. I have! I know you can’t believe it, but it’s true. And I’ve had as much luck with it as… as anyone else has. I’ve met some stellar guys.
Take this guy here, for example. He hit me up one day. These are the photos he had on his profile:

Yes, the third picture was repeated like that, as the fifth picture, on the site.
And here was our (first… and last) exchange (not corrected, so “sic” “sic” “sic”!):
him: love that cute pic, wishi could marry you
him: love to have you as my guest on long weekends
Me: hi, thx
Me: so, i’m curious about your pictures. where did you go to have those done?
him: sure , “him” here btw
Me: hi, “him”
him: sorry have a b/f or ome one to please you yet
[after re-reading that line several times, I got what he meant]
Me: no
Me: but you didn’t answer me about the pix
him: oh wall mart since i dont have a camera
Me: they’re very unusual
him: read back
him: i did answer you stud
him: wall mart
him: i dont have a camera
Me: yep, got it.
I actually signed off in a kind way with him, quickly after this, after he repeated a variation on the opening bit about me coming to live with him. It’s all rather sad, it wakens the compassionate person in me (on a good day).
It’s enough to make you cry. For humanity. He lives in a small town, and he doesn’t have a camera, and he uses his real full name as his screen name (why not?), and he thinks it’s okay to sit in front of those backgrounds and get his picture taken… and in the democratic world of online, he is able to try and chat with me. Someone like me.
Oh, I almost forgot. This is my profile picture on this dating site:
